a day in the life

Butter Beans Food & Garden Camp!

Our days begin at 9am with a good morning greeting and a short exercise and stretch to prepare for the day ahead.
We play name games, talk about the day’s activities, and share what each camper wants to get out of the day’s events. Because we go on a lot of field trips, we also review the camp rules each morning to make sure we are all having fun in the safest way possible.

As we greet the morning, we jump into a fun food project that can be anything from pickling pickles for a picnic later in the week to making smoothie pops for that afternoon’s snack.

Our mornings alternate between field trips – chocolate makers, community gardens, roof top and other farms, farmers’ markets, and more – and base camp activities that revolve around the camp food themes of growing, food production, preserving food, and cooking!
One of the amazing parts of the Butter Beans camp is watching the inner Chef de Cuisine come out in all of our campers.

We conduct a ‘cooking class’ almost every day and the end result is lunch. The food was amazing. I can’t believe we made it all! – 2011 camper

Campers use fresh ingredients they purchased at the various farmers’ markets where we shop and make up variations on the food themes that excite them. It is fascinating to watch young chefs mix flavors that turn out delicious that most adults would have never considered. This was the most fun camp ever! – 2011 camper

By the afternoon, our campers are ready for a good three-legged race, water balloons and other games in the park.
We incorporate down time throughout the day based on the schedule to make sure everyone has snacks and feels good. We wind down the day with a time for sharing to hear what we all learned that day and one thing we cherish from the day. This leaves us ready and excited to come back the next day, for the next adventure. Griffin had the best time with you during the break – said it was one of the best things he has ever done. – 2011 camper parent
