Butter Beans Food & Garden Summer Camp!
The camp day is from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
(Extended care options starting at 8:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM).
Our days begin at 9am with a good morning greeting and a short exercise and stretch to prepare for the day ahead.
We play warm up games, talk about the day’s activities, and share what each camper hopes to learn or achieve that day. Because we go on a lot of field trips, we also review the camp rules each morning to make sure we are all having fun in the safest way possible.
The mornings are filled with fun, food related projects. This can be anything from starting a batch of pickles to be enjoyed later in the week to making smoothie pops for afternoon snack.
Our mornings alternate between field trips – chocolate makers, community gardens, roof top and urban farms, farmers’ markets, local restaurants and more – along with base camp activities. Whether we are on location or making memories at our camp headquarters, our days revolve around food themes including growing, food production, preserving, and cooking!
One of the amazing parts of the Butter Beans camp is watching the inner Chef de Cuisine come out in all of our campers.
We conduct a ‘cooking class’ almost every day and the end result is lunch. The food was amazing. I can’t believe we made it all! – 2013 camper
Campers use fresh ingredients that they purchased at local farmers’ markets to create recipes for different lunches and snacks throughout the week. It is fascinating to watch young chefs mix flavors that turn out delicious, combinations that most adults would have never even considered! This was the most fun camp ever! – 2014 camper
By the afternoon, our campers are ready for a good three-legged race, fun with water balloons, and other games in the park. We also incorporate time every day for a little snack and relaxation, this way everyone feels good!
As the end of day approaches, we wind down with time for every camper to share one thing they learned and cherished that day. This leaves us ready and excited to come back the next day, for the next adventure.
Griffin had the best time with you during the break – said it was one of the best things he has ever done. – 2011 camper parent
